A proof-of-life check-in is a recurring action used to show that a person still has access to their account and is able to respond. AnyCircumstances uses scheduled check-ins as part of its encrypted file release system.
What is a proof-of-life protocol?
A proof-of-life protocol asks for a known response at recurring intervals. In a digital system, that may be an authenticated account action. It is a predefined signal for a workflow—not a legal certification and not a medical determination.

What happens if a check-in is missed?
A missed proof-of-life check-in starts your customizable grace period. It does not immediately release files. During the grace period, reminder emails continue as configured, and a successful PIN check-in cancels the pending release.
Why use a grace period?
People travel, overlook messages, lose email access, replace devices, or simply forget. A grace period reduces false alarms by creating time to recover access and respond before recipients are contacted.
What happens when the grace period expires?
If there is still no successful check-in, the release process begins. Designated recipients are emailed a secure link through which they can access and decrypt the files assigned to them.
